i got the billet to weld and i forged it out some and its in the etch now theres a spot or two that not too good but i think they can be ground out edit it seems the bad welds are around the nickle

The wrought was from some kind of connecting rod, it was split and forged into a "U" on one end with holes for a cross pin. As for your problems on the first try... who knows? Maybe the planets were...

I think I would grind that one out too, unless its near one end of the billet ... then you could forge it into the tang. Chasing out the cold shuts is just part of it. I still think you did a fine job...

Watch out for that welding bug If there's anything worjth saving on the billet then by all means keep it and twist it or pattern it somehow and use it it for guards and bolsters. -- Mike P. --
